EdTech Demonstrator School

What is the Role of Demonstrator Schools and Colleges

The DfE and delivery partners have identified twenty schools and colleges which have demonstrated excellence in their use of technology to support teaching and learning and have the capacity to help others. There are plans to extend the reach of this programme over the coming weeks.

These schools and colleges represent a wide range of contexts, from rural to urban and primary to further education and include a number of Trusts with special needs provision. Demonstrator Schools and Colleges will offer packages of support, ranging from guidance, online tutorials, webinars and recorded content.

Advice and training will be available to some schools and colleges across the country which are most in need of support, for example those which have recently deployed a new online learning platform and those with the most disadvantaged learners.

The Hambleton, Ribblesdale and Highfurlong Consortium

The Demonstrator School is made up of a high experienced consortium consisting of Hambleton Primary Academy, near Poulton-le-Fylde, Ribblesdale High School in Clitheroe and Highfurlong Special School in Blackpool. The leaders of the three schools have established a broad range of support for other schools across all sectors.

Hambleton uses a combination of Google Classroom and iPads extensively at their own school and have supported others to implement this technology to support young people from a teaching and learning perspective. Their aim is to ensure that the technology is used to support and enhance traditional learning methods, both within the classroom and beyond.

Ribblesdale High School has a long history of using technology within teaching and learning amongst its 1300 pupils and has partnered with Microsoft as a Training Academy for the last three years, sharing its expertise both nationally and globally. They have extensive experience of supporting others with the development and implementation of their own digital transformation plans, ensuring technology is used where it has the most impact.

Highfurlong has a long tradition of using technology to support learners with higher needs. They have wide experience of using technology to facilitate and enhance communication allowing pupils to show their individual personalities and share their thoughts, feelings, likes and dislikes instead of others presuming and thinking for them. Their strategic vision is that assistive technology becomes a lifelong, lifesaving tool for our pupils.

Don’t have a digital platform?

With the news that the Government has pledged to provide laptops and tablets for vulnerable and disadvantaged young people and to boost remote education across England during the closure of schools due to the Covid-19 lockdown, thousands of schools stand to benefit from the EdTech Demonstrator School initiative together with the government’s ground-breaking partnership with the tech giants to gain access to education platforms. Schools can apply through The Key for School Leaders for government-funded support to get set up on one of two free-to-use digital education platforms: G Suite for Education or Office 365 Education.

More information about the peer-to-peer support programme, including the use of technology to support remote learning, can be found on the LGFL website.
